Don Soker Contemporary Art is pleased to announce Veronika Dobers “Red Lines”, an exhibition from October 5 – November 2. The opening reception is Saturday. October 5, 5-8 pm. Artist talk at 6:30 pm.
Red Lines continues Veronika Dobers’ interest in the elementary topics of human existence. Based in Germany, besides drawings on paper, she works primarily in the technique of Hinterglasmalerei (reverse painting on glass). She uses acrylic instead of glass plate, which is at once a picture background and a foreground layer. To the viewer, it is both a window into the world of the picture and a partition wall keeping away the events of the picture. This creates an unusual tension between proximity and remoteness, which is conductive to her artistic intensions.

The exhibition features paintings from her workgroups if one thinks, man and nature, and beyond the horizon. A long recurring theme in her work is the conflict between utopia and nostalgia (go or stay, here or there). She is interested in the point between, the point of decision. The work with this title shows a man in a boat who starts his journey into the unknown, and he must decide on a direction. She says: In my work I deal with elementary topics of human existence. I find parallels between the forms of expression of nature and those of human thinking, which is also a part of nature. I work intuitively. If I feel that a form carries a high potential in itself, it can accompany my work very long. I like to work with the line whose precision forces a hardly tangible thought in a concrete form.

Veronika Dobers was born in Annaberg-Buchholz in the former East Germany where she received her MA. For many years she has lived and worked in Bremen. From 2007-11 she maintained a studio in Kobe, Japan where she has had several exhibitions. Her works have also been shown many times in Europe and she has been the recipient of various grants and public commissions. This will be her 3rd solo exhibition with Don Soker Contemporary Art.
