Dinner & Conversation #2

In honor of our 40th anniversary, BAVC is proud to present Dinner & Conversation, a quarterly series of intimate dinners open to the BAVC community which celebrate our past, present, and future. Over a delicious catered spread, each dinner discussion will center around an area that BAVC has helped to pioneer over the decades – workforce development, the state of audio-visual preservation and video art, and independent and public media – with special guests of honor on-hand to help steer the conversation. These dinners are also a chance for us to acknowledge and celebrate the people and partnerships that have made, and which continue to make, the work BAVC does possible. All door proceeds will benefit BAVC programs.

On the menu: Preserving video art’s past, illuminating its future Magnetic media’s relative inexpensiveness and portability made it attractive to visual artists but much of what was created or captured is now due to be lost. At the same time, “media art” as a field has expanded in response to technological advances and a changing art world. As one of the nation’s longest-standing non-profit video and audio preservation organizations, BAVC has been working to save work from video’s heyday while looking ahead to challenges faced by future preservationists tasked with conserving today’s media. Join guests of honor Doug Hall, Sally Jo Fifer and Desirée Holman, along with staff from BAVC’s Preservation program, to discuss the past and future of media art. Why dinner? BAVC was born out of kitchen table conversations between artists, activists, and filmmakers. Held in the spirit of these early gatherings, Dinner & Conversation lets you jump into the bigger-picture conversations BAVC has been a part of by bringing together so many from our broader community and our past. These dinners are also a chance for us to acknowledge and celebrate the people and partnerships that have made, and which continue to make, the work BAVC does possible. It would be an honor to have you at our table!

Guests of honor: Sally Jo Fifer is President and CEO of Independent Television Service (ITVS) and Executive Producer of Independent Lens. Doug Hall is a photographer and media artist who works in a range of practices including performance, installation, video, and photography. Desirée Holman is an Oakland-based artist who's multi-sensory work positions theatrical tools, like costumes or props, in settings that illuminate ideas of identity, knowledge, and the complexities of the human psyche.
