The public is invited to a free Artist/Curator Talk to hear from exhibiting artist John Yoyogi Fortes and curator Philip E. Linhares. Fortes is a well-known California artist whose large paintings explore his inner world of whimsy, both light and dark. He begins a painting with spontaneous gestures, then lets it build its own momentum until the magic moment when he can declare the work complete. His exhibit, titled Hell 2 Pay and Other Works, also includes smaller unframed works on paper that add a delicate touch alongside his larger paintings. There is even a sculpture that looks like the period one finds at the bottom of an exclamation point, a very interesting work. Fortes has exhibited both nationally and internationally, and has received numerous awards and grants, among them a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant; a Visual Artist Fellowship from the California Arts Council; and inclusion in the International Arts & Artists traveling exhibition, Infinite Mirror; Images of American Identity.
