Ain’t Nothin’ Tender

Intersection created one of the first alternative community service programs in San Francisco for artists working with disenfranchised youth in the Tenderloin. Fifty years later, artists working with youth from the Tenderloin Clubhouse of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco still carry on the legacy of Intersection’s founders. Armed with cameras, this newest generation of youth growing up in one of America’s toughest neighborhoods takes to the streets. The result—Ain’t Nothin’ Tender—an exhibition which takes an unflinching look at lives roughly lived through the lens of these very observant teens. They capture a Tenderloin that most of us can’t see through the incredible poverty and desperation on open display in the streets. Photos of sports and play, public art, food, and family, provide a beautiful counterpoint reflecting the incredible ethnic diversity of the neighborhood and the undiminished hope of many of its residents.
